Aker recommended for carbon capture at Mongstad (12.12.2008)
Aker has been recommended as a technology supplier for the European CO2-capture Test Center at Mongstad, Norway.
Mongstad will rank among the earliest European demonstration facilities for the removal of the climate gas carbon dioxide from the smokestacks of industrial and power plants.
Aker Clean Carbon was recommended for the Mongstad test center by Gassnova, the Norwegian government’s enterprise for the development of carbon management technology and implementation of carbon capture and storage.
“This status highlights Norwegian technology and represents a major step forward for Aker’s industrial targeting of carbon capture. We have already experienced a great deal of international interest in our work. The Mongstad project will drive recognition of Norway’s leading position in carbon capture,” says Jan Roger Bjerkestrand, CEO of Aker Clean Carbon.
Aker Clean Carbon is a small, start-up company in the Aker family that specializes in the development and sale of carbon capture technology and complete CO2 capture facilities. Aker Solutions, the “big brother” in the Aker family, will play a central role in Aker Clean Carbon projects by delivering comprehensive engineering services and facility construction.
“A contract for the Mongstad test center will provide us with invaluable experience. Our first test facility is already in operation, at a site near Stavanger, Norway. Mongstad can confirm that our technology can be scaled up and provide design and construction experience for larger-scale facilities,” says Simen Lieungh, CEO of Aker Solutions.
Leading experts rank carbon capture as a vital technology in efforts to overcome global climate challenges. Aker Clean Carbon and Aker Solutions intend to become key suppliers of technology and turnkey facilities for carbon capture worldwide.
A final investment decision regarding the Mongstad test center is expected in the first quarter of 2009, following the relevant decision-making process by the Norwegian parliament, Stortinget.
